Liverpool Appoints UK’s First Regional Chief AI Officer
Liverpool City Region has made history by appointing Tiffany St James as the United Kingdom’s first Chief AI Officer in regional government. The groundbreaking appointment positions the region at the forefront of ethical artificial intelligence implementation across public services.
Context and Background
St James brings exceptional credentials to the role, having served on the Global AI Council and collaborated with Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web. Her previous experience includes serving as the government’s first Head of Public Participation and co-founding digital transformation consultancy Transmute.
The appointment forms part of Mayor Steve Rotheram’s ambitious vision to establish Liverpool as a leader in the UK’s AI revolution. This strategic move follows Kyndryl’s recent decision to establish an AI hub in the region, reinforcing Liverpool’s growing reputation as a technology centre.
St James will spearhead a dedicated taskforce focused on transforming artificial intelligence into what officials describe as a “force for good” across the region’s health, transport, and education sectors.
Looking Forward
The new Chief AI Officer will collaborate closely with local councils, public sector organisations, and innovative partners to ensure AI implementation remains ethical, inclusive, and forward-thinking. This approach aims to maximise benefits for residents whilst addressing potential challenges proactively.
Mayor Rotheram emphasised the significance of the appointment, stating that “Artificial Intelligence has the potential to be one of the defining technologies of our age.” St James expressed her enthusiasm for the role, noting she was “thrilled to join the Liverpool City Region – a place with bold ambition and heart.”
