Perplexity Launches Comet Browser Worldwide After Record Waitlist Demand

AI search company Perplexity has released its Comet browser to users worldwide for free, following what the company describes as unprecedented waitlist demand. Since the limited launch on 9 July 2025, millions have joined the waitlist at a rate faster than the company could process invites, making Comet what Perplexity calls “the most sought-after AI product of the year.”

Context and Background

The browser incorporates AI assistants that work alongside users as they browse, with early adopters reporting a 6-18 times increase in questions asked within the first day of use. The Comet Assistant can handle research, meetings, code, e-commerce, and other tasks whilst users remain in their workflow. Each new browser tab includes a dedicated AI assistant ready to answer questions or take actions on behalf of the user.

Beyond the browser, Perplexity has announced Background Assistants, which work simultaneously and asynchronously to complete tasks without user intervention. The company has also revealed early previews of Comet for mobile devices, featuring voice technology designed for phone-based interaction. These announcements build on the recent Email Assistant feature launched for Max subscribers, which handles scheduling and draft replies via email.

Looking Forward

The company is positioning Comet as a fundamental shift away from traditional chat bot interfaces towards a more integrated assistant model. Perplexity has announced inaugural partnerships with publishers through Comet Plus, bringing what the company describes as “reputable sources of news and information” into the platform. The mobile version is expected to launch soon, extending Comet’s capabilities across devices with an interface optimised for mobile use.
