OpenAI Transforms ChatGPT into Universal App Platform with SDK Launch
TL;DR: OpenAI has announced an SDK preview enabling developers to build full-stack applications directly within ChatGPT, allowing apps like Figma, Spotify, and Zillow to run inline within conversation windows. The SDK, built on the open-source Model Context Protocol, gives developers complete control over app data, actions, and interactive user interfaces.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed the new SDK at the company’s Dev Days keynote on 6 October 2025, describing it as enabling developers to “build real apps inside of ChatGPT”. The announcement marks a significant expansion of ChatGPT’s capabilities beyond conversational AI towards becoming a universal application frontend.
Context and Background
The SDK provides developers with “full stack” control over how their applications integrate with ChatGPT. Built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), existing MCP developers need only add an HTML resource to enable ChatGPT integration. This approach allows applications to expose context back to ChatGPT, creating what OpenAI engineers describe as “ChatGPT talking to apps”.
Launch demonstrations showcased Figma generating poster designs within ChatGPT conversations, whilst Spotify playlists could be created and managed without leaving the chat interface. OpenAI software engineer Alexi Christakis demonstrated how ChatGPT could expand on embedded Coursera videos in real time, accessing visual context automatically without user explanation.
Initial launch partners include Spotify, Canva, Zillow, Expedia, and Booking.com, with Peloton, Target, Uber, and Doordash integration coming in subsequent weeks. Additional developers can begin building with the SDK immediately, submitting apps for review and publication later this year.
Looking Forward
Whilst Altman mentioned an “agentic commerce protocol” enabling instant checkout from within ChatGPT, detailed monetisation plans remain forthcoming. Applications meeting OpenAI’s developer guidelines will be listed in a comprehensive directory, with those achieving higher design and functionality standards receiving prominent placement.
The announcement also included AgentKit, a simplified GUI interface for creating specialised chatbots, alongside API updates for Sora 2, GPT5-Pro, and the company’s real-time audio interface. These updates signal OpenAI’s broader strategy to transform ChatGPT into a platform for third-party development rather than merely a standalone product.
