Modern Data Integration Essential for AI Innovation Success

New research from HubSpot has highlighted how fragmented and siloed data represents a critical barrier for companies exploring AI tools. One-third of businesses surveyed have already experienced revenue loss due to scattered customer information, undermining both operational efficiency and strategic decision-making capabilities.
Context and Background
The research reveals concerning gaps in data infrastructure across organisations. Nine in 10 businesses (92%) acknowledge that valuable insights sit outside their CRM systems—scattered across spreadsheets, chat platforms, and disconnected tools. This fragmentation creates a significant productivity drain, with 37% reporting time lost reconciling information from multiple sources.
Manual data management remains surprisingly prevalent despite technological advances. Three-quarters (74%) of firms still manually transfer data into CRM platforms at least weekly, whilst 88% face at least one major challenge in AI adoption. Only 31% believe most of their data is accessible to AI systems, severely limiting the potential value of intelligent automation.
Regulatory complexity adds further complications. To date, 71% of UK businesses have experienced AI project delays or disruptions due to GDPR requirements or the upcoming AI Act, highlighting the need for compliance-aware data strategies from the outset.
Looking Forward
“The organisations that will succeed are those that focus on breaking down internal silos and ensuring insights can flow freely and securely across teams,” explained Mark Barry, EMEA VP of Sales and Managing Director at HubSpot. The clearest recommendation is for companies to unify customer data into a single source, enabling both advanced reporting and AI-enhanced analysis.
Building AI-ready infrastructure whilst anticipating legislative changes represents a strategic priority. “By prioritising unified, intelligent data strategies, while staying ahead of evolving regulations, businesses can turn digital disruption into a serious competitive advantage,” Barry concluded. In an era where customer discovery increasingly shifts to AI channels, structured and accessible data has never been more essential.
