The rollout forms part of Lloyds’ £4 billion technology and data investment announced in 2022, supporting the bank’s strategic transformation to better serve customers. The deployment includes Microsoft 365 Copilot for productivity tasks and GitHub Copilot for software engineering, with nearly 5,000 engineers using the latter tool regularly.

Recent surveys of Lloyds’ colleagues reveal practical time savings, with employees reporting an average of 46 minutes saved per day. The tools are helping teams summarise documents, prepare for meetings, and reduce administrative burdens. Chief Technology Officer Vic Weigler highlighted one notable achievement: “We converted 11,000 lines of code across 83 files in half the expected time.”

The bank has established robust AI assurance frameworks and built an AI Centre of Excellence housing over 200 specialists, including data scientists, machine learning engineers, and AI ethicists. This infrastructure supports responsible innovation whilst enabling rapid deployment at scale.

Looking Forward

Lloyds Banking Group has invested significantly in colleague AI literacy, with this year’s Data & AI Summer School attracting 90,000 registrations across 250 sessions. The bank has also hired over 4,000 people in data and technology roles since early 2022, including 80 new data science graduates joining in 2025.

Ranil Boteju, Chief Data and Analytics Officer, emphasised the strategic foundation: “We quickly identified the transformative impact that AI could deliver across our organisation, and over the last few years have put in place the assurance frameworks and tools we need to deploy AI safely and at scale.” Microsoft UK CEO Darren Hardman described Lloyds’ approach as “pioneering”, noting the bank’s position as a “truly world-class AI-powered digital bank.”
