TL;DR

Mollie has become one of the first European payment providers to build a functional payment integration with ChatGPT. During a Lisbon hackathon, the team demonstrated a complete purchase—from product discovery to Apple Pay checkout—through an AI assistant.

Ready for Day One

The breakthrough centres on a delegated payments API making Mollie’s infrastructure compatible with OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). Although OpenAI hasn’t launched this protocol in Europe yet, Mollie’s systems are positioned to help businesses accept AI-assisted payments from the moment it arrives.

“Our customers shouldn’t need to be experts in competing protocols,” said Bernardo Caldas, Director of Data & AI at Mollie. “We handle this for them. Our infrastructure is ready, which means they can focus on their business, knowing we’ll be prepared to help them sell through AI from day one.”

Strategic Positioning

With over 250,000 customers ranging from startups to large enterprises, Mollie is positioning itself for what may become a fundamental shift in e-commerce. The company is also collaborating with other platforms on the competing Agent Payments Protocol, hedging its bets across emerging standards.

One Integration, Multiple Protocols

Mollie’s long-term vision offers businesses access to different AI commerce protocols through a single integration. Rather than choosing between platforms, merchants can continue building on existing Mollie infrastructure while gaining access to new AI-powered sales channels as they emerge.

“This isn’t about a product launch,” Caldas emphasised. “This is a strategic move that shows we’re actively building for the future. When this new sales channel opens, we’re ready.”

Looking Forward

The demonstration signals the beginning of a potential transformation in how commerce operates. As AI assistants increasingly intermediate between consumers and merchants, payment providers that establish early compatibility may capture significant advantage—particularly in Europe, where local providers could gain ground before US giants fully expand their commerce capabilities.
